A new front door can dramatically change the look and curb appeal of any home. Think about it, it’s the entry point, it sets the tone of the entire home. The Next Home Project House is a dated, 80’s, mediteranean style tract home that needed to go to a more contemporary place. Finding a door with just the right look required a good deal of searching for inspiration…
I wanted the new door to make more of a statement than the old door. I decided that the new door would have 2 sidelights instead of the original ½ a sidelight –making it larger and allowing ore light inside the once dark entry way.

After a long search online Voila… the winner – a mahogany 3 panel door with non-see through sidelights (before staining). I found the door at a website called ETO Doors – they’ve got so many to choose from!
And last but not least we look at the new trend of Barn Doors. Barn Doors have taken off in popularity and the great thing about them, in addition to instant style, is that they can accommodate much larger openings that standard door widths of 2 1/2 feet.
We enlarged the door openings to the office and master bedroom. After measuring the new openings for the office (5 feet wide) and master bedroom (4 feet wide), we ordered barn doors. Barn Doors come in custom sizes and finishes and they are a great solution!

*TIP – For a Bigger House Feel – enlarge door and room openings
*TIP – when ordering barn doors make sure to order the barn door larger than your door width to cover the edges of the opening.
Now you don’t…
Every front door needs a good lock. I wanted an electronic, keyless lock. These locks from Schlage are great for extended family, kids, sitters, etc. You can give the 4 digit code to people and if it needs to be changed you just change the code (you don’t have to get a new lock & keys!) It’s great for middle and high school aged kids too as they don’t have a key to lose (plus – they love key pads!)

We didn’t want to put a peephole in our new front door… and we wanted to be able to know who was at the front door from other parts of the house and backyard so we installed a camera above the front door of the Project House. When we looked for a home system I wanted to make sure cameras could be included and controlled with the system. I’m happy to have found, and installed, the Elan system. The system can control many things including front door cameras like the one we have on the Next Home Project House.
