Yes, the ladies look lovely… but check out the cool wallcovering behind them!
Recently, I learned that the Academy Awards – yes, the Oscars – has an official wallpaper company – It’s Astek Inc.! For many years I thought wallpaper was kind of uncool, old fashioned, and something that you needed to remove or paint over! But I was wrong! Wallpaper, now called ‘wallcovering,’ is very cool indeed!
Some of my favorites….
Faux weathered wood…
Many, many, many to choose from!
We were thrilled to take a tour of this amazingly creative company her in Southern California with Aaron Kirsch, Astek Inc. owner, to see what’s really going on in this industry. I was blown away! Today, digital imaging, and huge, technically advanced printers, make it possible to recreate anything real or imagined as wallcovering.
We choose some cool wallcoverings and had pros hang the paper. The result – BIG impact and instant style!!
Front Room Next Home Project House Wallcovering:
Wilshire – Rock (from the Surface Collection)
Looks like a concrete wall!
The Front Room of the Next Home Project House – everyone who comes in thinks it’s real concrete! And of course they want to touch it and they can – it’s very durable!
Lumiere – Pearl (from the Lavish Collection)
Looks like thick paint brush strokes on subltly metallic paper – adds depth and character.
Every home needs art to finish it off and add character. Art can be really expensive so we created our own…
I think it’s important to make art personal and fun. We used the wallpaper and digital tools at Astek to create some very large scale art.
One project I am excited about is a very large scale re-creation of the “Game of Life.” It was a reissue game and I liked the look of the box. It says ‘The family game’ which I liked. I contacted the CEO of Hasbro and he kindly gave me permission to reproduce this image. Very nice!
Next we visited my friend Alisa Spaulding’s fine art “Frame Gallery” for help constructing a large frame for the life piece.
Next we need to tackle a comfy couch for the family/TV room. I wanted it to be gray or white to go with the color scheme of the house. I also wanted to be able to change fabric covers/colors and seating configuration for different occasions and spaces.
People move more than they used to and couches are one of the hardest things to relocate. Styles and needs change too and investment pieces, like the family couch, should be able to keep up with the times.
So again… I did some research and found what I wanted, a grown up transformer couch, from a company called Lovesac I love to meet inventors, creators and founders of companies, so I asked Shawn Nelson, the inventor of the modern beanbag and the Lovesac couch, to meet with me so I could learn more about his latest idea to reinvent the sofa. He’s created a system where dozens of configurations can be created along with many slipcover options. …and sustainable fabrics can be ordered …and their clever shipping method cuts way down on shipping too… and, I never thought I’d say this about a couch, but it’s fun!
Behind the scenes – shooting Episode 9 with Shawn Nelson and our camera crew at the Next Home Project House on the Lovesac we choose
Beautiful, comfortable, versatile… and yes, the white is a little hard to keep clean but the slip covers can be washed!
(The art behind the sectional is another piece we had made at Astek with places that we love.)
Movie time (same room, before the art went up, same Lovesac pieces)
4K UHD TV:
Since movies and television are best watched in the highest definition available, and since we are shooting the Next Home television series in 4K Ultra High Definition, one of our main goals was to feature a curved 65” 4K UHD TV on the wall in the Next Home Project House.
Same pieces with gray covers – Sactionals come with two sets of covers!
4K Ultra HDTV for the Family/TV Room
Inspiration – stunning 4K Ultra High Definition Smart TV
I’ve been around home technology for the last 15 years so I’ve become a little jaded and hard to impress. But when I saw a curved 4K ultra HD TV for the first time I just couldn’t take my eyes off it! It was so beautiful and captivating. We choose a HISENSE 4K UHD TV for the project house. At the time there wasn’t much programming to watch in 4K UHD (and that’s still improving) but I wanted to create some content – so we created the Next Home television series in 4K UHD. Today there is 4K streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, etc. You can also use a 4K Blu-Ray disc player for movies and get stunning detail.
4K UHD Smart televisions come in both flat and curved models. I prefer the curve but that’s really all it is, a preference.
4K is more pixels than HD which means a clearer, crisper picture and more details than HD. And, it’s called 4K because the images are around 4,000 pixels wide.
Once you see a 4K set up close, streaming 4K content… you’re gonna want one!
